The opening of the 2018 Welgemeend August Art Month is celebrated with the elegant Gala Fundraising Dinner.

Come and enjoy the curated exhibition with an insightful discussion by Frank Kilbourn, Strauss & Co Executive Chairperson and Art Collector. This year’s theme focuses on South African women artists of the past 100 years with artwork from artists such as Nel Erasmus, Maggie Laubser, Cecily Sash, Mary Sibande, Penny Siopis, Irma Stern and many more.

Beautifully created food prepared by Annelize from Escoffier Catering and complementing Delaire Graff wine, which promises to stimulate all senses! An auction of select items will take place after dinner. All proceeds in aid of the restoration and conservation of Welgemeend and Boerneef Art Collection.

Frank Kilbourn started his professional career in the early 1990’s after obtaining degrees in Law, Commerce and Philosophy. He practised as an attorney until 1991, then became a merchant banker and businessman. He founded the Bright Group of companies in 2002, focusing on private equity and venture capital. He is also the cofounder of the Bright Foundation, a PBO involved in, amongst other things, education, nature conservation and promotion of the arts and culture.

The Foundation has co-sponsored several exhibitions and publications of South African artists, including the John Kramer book launch in September 2014, the Paul Emsley Retrospective, held at the Sasol Art Museum at the “Woordfees” in Stellenbosch during March 2012, which event Frank opened. Frank also had the privilege of opening the Standard Bank 150 Years Commerative Exhibition in October 2012 as well as Clare Menck’s first solo exhibition at Erdmann Contemporary in September 2014.

He serves on the Board of City Lodge Hotels Ltd and is Lead Independent Director. Frank was Chairperson of the South African Tourism Board until July 2014 and chaired the Jan van Riebeeck Primary School Board of Governors for 9 years until 2014. He is a co–owner of Grootbos Nature Reserve near Gansbaai, a trustee of WWF (South Africa) and was a member of the Advisory Panel of the Centre for Business in Society at University of Stellenbosch Business School.

Frank and Lizelle Kilbourn started collecting art thirty years ago, while students at the Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg. What started out as a hobby developed into a lifetime mission of building a representative collection of modern South African art. In the process an awareness developed that the privilege of owning a private art collection of this nature is counterbalanced by the responsibility of preserving and sharing the joy of it, with other people. Part of Frank and Lizelle’s aim is to encourage other collectors to make more ‘private’ art available for public viewing.

Frank was appointed Executive Chairman of Strauss & Co effective 01 July 2016 and is also a member of the Irma Stern Museum Committee (ISMC).
