Strauss & Co Masterclass: Egon Guenther and the Amadlozi Circle & The Acerbic Eye of Alexander Podlashuc
Wednesday, 18:30 to 20:30
28th August 2019

Dr Alastair Meredith, Senior Art Specialist of Strauss & Co Johannesburg elaborates on Egon Guenther and the Amadlozi Circle:
Egon Guenther left an indelible mark on South African art; as a collector, gallerist and dealer, he was enormously influential. From his galleries in Bree Street and Krans Street, he launched, promoted and shaped the careers of a remarkable group of artists, amongst them Cecil Skotnes, Sydney Kumalo, Cecily Sash, Giuseppe Cattaneo, Edoardo Villa and Peter Haden. This lecture will consider the work of all these artists, but particularly that of Peter Haden, whose first exhibition since 1969 will be on show at Welgemeend in August.
The Acerbic Eye of Alexander Podlashuc is presented by Hayden Proud, Curator of the Iziko Museum of South Africa:
‘Pod’, as he was generally and affectionately known, was a figure who moved with ease between different worlds. Originating within a tradition of printmaking and of graphic satire which in turn influenced the look and texture of his later painted images, he saw political and social absurdities with a jaundiced eye. This lecture will look at Pod’s crucial formation as an artist under his teachers at London’s Central School of Art, and the nature of his caustic and topsy-turvy images of social and political realities here in South Africa, as well as abroad.
