Strauss & Co Talk with art journalist Amanda Botha – South African contemporary work – Huberte Rupert as pioneer
Tuesday, 18:00 to 20:00
26th August 2025

South African contemporary work: Huberte Rupert as pioneer.
The contemporary art market, as we understand it today, was established in the 1980s when the South African Art Museum – now known as the Iziko South African National Gallery – hosted three Cape Town Triennale’s. These exhibitions marked a significant milestone in the development of the contemporary art genre in South Africa.
The Rupert Art Foundation conceptualized and financed the first Triennale, offering substantial financial prizes and acquiring key works through Mrs. Rupert’s patronage. This investment helped lay the foundation for both the primary and secondary markets for contemporary art in the country. As a result, private art galleries began to emerge, catering to both national and international markets.
Refreshments are included for Strauss & Co Talks and Walkabouts. Please join us 30 minutes before scheduled time to enjoy it.
