The history of art in the Cape usually includes such stalwarts as Pieter Wenning, Robert Gwelo Goodman, Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser, Wolf Kibel and Gregoire Boonzaier, but another art history might be written focussing on a completely different group of artists who didn’t receive instant success in the Cape art scene, but artists who, over time, have grown in acclaim in the South African art world.

These artists include a young Gerard Sekoto and Ernest Mancoba, who worked in Cape Town in the 1940s, and later, such artists as Peter Clarke and Gladys Mgudlandu, who worked indefatigably on their art oeuvre in the 1950s and 60s. The 1970s saw such artists as Albert Adams, Valerie Desmore and Dumile Feni in the Cape, but their art was only lauded much later. Lesser known, but equally important artists include Louis Maurice, Henry Jordaan and Lionel Davies. This talk proposes an alternative history to the dominant discourse on art in the Cape.
